DataPortability Project Charter

Summary: The following provides guidelines for DataPortability discussion and goals.

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to put existing technologies, techniques, policies and initiatives in context in order to facilitate translation, education, advocacy and ultimately implementation of data portability. Portability is defined as both physically moving data or simply porting the context in which the data is used.

Direction

The DataPortability Project has a Project Roadmap, which evolves as we progress.

Principles

  1. Open to anyone
  2. Transparency in our decisions
  3. Resolution by consensus
  4. Collaboration, not invention

Practices
These principles will be implemented by the DataPortability Action Groups.

Requirements of Participation and How to Join

All DataPortability Action Groups and the Public Discussion Group are open to the public to join.

Each action group will have at least one primary membership contact, who will be your point of contact to get full membership to any collaboration tools used by the group

Who selects Steering group members?
Membership is open to anyone who is interested.

Who selects the leaders?
Leaders are self-selected. Those that contribute, take ownership of infinitives and help encourage conversation and documentation will, by default, earn a leadership role.

Licenses and/or Restrictions on Usage of Work Product

All Project products of the DataPortability Project, except open source code, are intended to be openly available to the public under an applicable Creative Commons license.

Any open source code developed under the auspices of the actiongroups will also be made available under OSI approved open source licenses.

Current Deliverables and Milestones

Each Action Group has its own Roadmap and Scope of Responsibilities. Overall, however, the DataPortability Project aims to answer a key set of questions.
