Headline:

DataPortability Logo Competition- Help the DataPortability community create an important Trust Mark and win some great Prizes.

Sub Headline:

Red Hat recently sent a Cease and Desist claiming that the DataPortabilitylogo was too similar (Identical, in their words) to their Fedora Logo. While the claim is arguable, the DataPortability group has decided that rather than dispute the issue, we would take the advice of community members to hold a Logo Competition to replace the current logo with a new one. We are asking from submissions by March 11th, 2008.

News Summary:

In addition to having the honor to be the designer of the new DataPortability logo and to help the community create an important Trust Mark for the emerging Data Portability conversation, there are also many prizes from companies who support the DataPortability initiative and have donated prizes to be awarded to the winner including an iPhone, Ad space on Techcrunch, cash and more!
The DataPortability Logo is the center piece of the DataPortability Brand and will be used on blog sidebars, websites and projects to help promote the DataPortability Project. The badge will always link to www.dataportability.org.

As part of the submission, participants must be willing to give up all their rights to the copyright and donate it to the community via the DataPortability project.

Submissions can be made via JPG/GIF/PNG however please be prepared to provide high resolution/vector graphic versions of your work.

Submissions should be made by submitting logos to the Flickr pool: http://www.flickr.com/groups/dataportability/pool/

The logo should:

  • Be distinct, unique and easily identifiable
  • Remain clear and identifiable at small sizes (e.g. 16×16)
  • Convey the concept of moving/owning/syncing data
  • Aesthetically fit in with a broad range of site/application designs
  • Provide a clear silhouette that can be rendered in multiple colors

Quotes
Original request from Red Hat:
Red Hat, Inc. ("Red Hat") recently became aware that on your website, located at http://www.dataportability.org_, you are using art work that is identical to the Fedora Infinity design logo owned by Red Hat. Specifically, I am referring to two images on your site: the green and white logo, as well as the blue and white logo._

Michael Arrington on Techcrunch:
Whoever wins will have the thanks of a grateful community, and likely a lot of new business coming their way.

Allen Stern on CenterNetworks:

This could be a great way for the topic of data portability to reach past the tech bloggers/journalists. And for the designers who enter, it's an awesome way to get your name out.
